Nopales is something that lots of people eat here in Mexico. They are nutritious and have lots of medical benefits. My grandma cooks them in various ways...
My grandpa and my grandma love to eat them. I love them too. My grandma gives them to me in my veggie soup at noon.
And my mom... ? Well, my mom is another story. She does not like them. There is no way you can make her to eat them... Nope! No way! Yuck!
Then, the other day, my grandma went to the supermarket and there she found them dehydrated with chili. At home she told my mom to taste a little piece. And my mom loved it! And now it is my mom's favorite snack.

Those look most suspiciously like the things that bite my paws with their pointy things. Don't they hurt when you eat 'em? What do they taste like?

Mayzie
Hi Lorenza, guess what, I never heard of them! I would probably like them because I like almost everything except liver! LOL
Have a nice night!

Maybe the dried ones were too hot?? We have one of those cactus outside our condo in Phoenix but did not know they were edible! They have little sticker things all over them though...is grandma's hand full of owies??
Hope not.

You have better taste Lorenza.
Grandma's homemade dishes are simply the best.
Cheers!
Interesting! I love learning about new foods (and love to eat them too!).
I agree with you, Lorenza, I'd prefer the real things...with cheese or eggs-looks delicious!
Your buddy,
Bocci
Lorenza my mom has eaten those in Yuma, Arizona. A lady gave her some in a salad and some that she had grilled. Mom says they are delicious. Maybe your mom will put some in YOUR dehydrator.
The sound very interesting. We googled and couldn't find any restaurants that have them here, although there seems to be one in Chicago that specializes in them. We hope that they have them here soon so we can try them.
lotsa licks, Lola
Well, of course everybody has their own tastes! Mom thinks they look interesting. I'm always willing to try something new, at least once!

Hmmmm, Lorenza - we and our Mom think we would have to close our eyes really tight before we could try those. But maybe they really are pretty good - thanks for letting us see your foods. We would never have thought that cacti were good to eat.

I thinks the dried snacky kind sound really yummy though!

OMD, Lorenza, this is the first time we've ever heard that a cactus is some kind of delicacy. I hope they are as mouth watering as they look in the photos...Unlike you, I'd be to skittish to try. hehehe

Ooh, your Grandma is such a good cook! You're so lucky Lorenza. I wouldn't like those chili things either...those hot things are no good for doggie bellies.
Loyalty to the sweet lady who makes your beautiful outfits is a good trait, Lorenza. Bet she's walking on air to know you prefer her nopales to store bought.
I have never tried cactus before. I wonder what it tastes like. Here we have the ones with the poker things on it... I don't think I should eat those.
kisses
Daisy Mae

My mom says the collage of Grandma's dishes looks delicious!!! Mom wants to know what she does to the prickly part of the cactus?

I have never even seen a cactus, let alone actually eaten one. Now that I see your face I will know not to even try unless it is fresh.
Slobbers,
Mango
Of course nothing tastes as good as what your grandma makes fur you beclaws she's the best cook in the world! I'm pretty certain she could open her own restaurant AND her own alterations/sewing shop and make lots of green stuff fur herself!
Lorenza
I'm with you.. I'll stick to my frozen yogurt cups for a snack.
Silly humans.
norwood
They sound Yummy! How about a recipe from Grandma? I think Wyatt is collecting some.

How interesting! I'd never heard of nopales before! My human, Hsin-Yi, would have loved the dehydrated version too - she LOVES anything with chillis in it! :-)

Our mom and dad tried prickley pear cactus when they lived in Arizbona, but they didn't like it. And our mom said it wasn't worth all the work, They did eat prickley pear jelly if someone else made it! Have a great weekend, Lorenza!
Aire-hugs,
Penny & Patches
I've never heard of eating cactus! Not sure you could get me to try it. I already have to eat green beans and I'm sick of those.
Holly
Woof! Woof! Mmmm cactus ... Interesting. Grandma is the best. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
Nopales obviously means to your mom what okra means to mine. Ugh. Sorry you didn't enjoy the treats. They didn't look so appealing either. I know you read my last post though and I know you can get some of your beloved chicken strips. You want to know how? By being you.
Twink!
Our Grammy REALLY doesn't like those either! Her Mama used to make them in different dishes, too, but usually in eggs. Grammy never got a taste for them, but her sisters did. She wonders if she would like the new way though. She didn't like the sort of "slimy" taste that she thinks is a lot like okra, but that new way looked like it might have been dried, and that might make it better.
Hey our tortoise and turtles eat those cactus but mom has a hard time finding them so she sometimes has to order them 3 lbs at time. :)
